Lucki

the American Robin

Lucki is an American robin who lives in Tootie’s backyard year-round.

Lucki has leucism, meaning that he lacks some of the pigment in his feathers that his parents and other robins have. As a result, Lucki has white spots that other robins lack.

You can identify robins by their size and coloration. Most robins are black with reddish tan bellies. Robins like Lucki who have leucism are generally colored like other robins except that they have mottled white spots on their backs, wings, and bellies.

Lucki’s Home

Lucki was born in a nest his mom built in the honeysuckle bush in Tootie’s yard. His mom shaped the nest into a cup shape using twigs, grass, feathers, and roots. She reinforced the nest with mud.

He was one of four chicks to hatch from the sky blue eggs, and he lived with his family for two weeks.

During that time, his mom fed his siblings and him worms and later large bugs to help them grow strong.

At two weeks old, Lucki and his siblings left the nest to find their own territories.

Lucki’s Hobbies

In the mornings, Lucki likes to sing. Before it rains, he’ll also sing, reminding everyone around that this is his territory.

Although Lucki is normally a solitary bird, he will hang out with other robins during colder weather.

During the winter, he will forage with other robins, and last year, more robins came to visit Lucki and his family than Tootie and Yoshi had ever seen. They crowded the trees and bushes and nearly covered the ground at one point. The large group that Lucki and his family formed is called a round.

The other birds stayed away that week. Tootie and Yoshi didn’t even see Kevin, the crow, or Biv, the blue jay.

Lucki’s Diet

Lucki is an omnivore, meaning he eats both meat and plants. His favorite food is earthworms, which make up a large portion of his diet. He also eats berries, especially during the colder months.

He hunts by using both sight and hearing. He’s able to see worms tunneling near the surface and hear them digging.

Because Lucki has a good memory, he can remember which areas of Tootie’s yard are the best for finding worms. He forages in the same areas of the lawn each morning, and, in the afternoons forages in another area.
